"Sober" is a single by Demi Lovato. It was released on all major streaming platforms on June 21, 2018.
Background & release
Demi surprisingly released this song on June 21, 2018, without announcing it beforehand. She referred to this song being "her truth".
In it, Demi admits to breaking her sobriety after she had just celebrated 6 years free from drugs & alcohol in March 2018, 3 months before the song was released.
The song's release was accompanied by a simple lyric video that starts with a video montage with several flashbacks to her partying days. The series of clips also show Demi’s parents: Dianna & Patrick, other friends and loved ones, even her ex-boyfriend, Wilmer Valderrama.
Even though some people thought this song might be about a past relapse Demi later confirmed that it was about a recent one and that she broke her six of sobriety.
She performed the song live for the first time on June 24, 2018, and during that performance even started crying. However, after she performed the song she took to Twitter to announce that she's "a new person with a new life" implying that she has overcome struggles following a relapse. She also thanked her fans, friends, and family and expressed how grateful she is for their support during such a hard time.
Demi performed the song during her show at Rock in Rio in Lisbon, on June 24, 2018. She posted footage from the LiveXLive live stream of her performance on Instagram and Twitter, and wrote: "Tonight I took the stage, a new person with a new life." She subsequently performed the song during the Tell Me You Love Me World Tour after "Warrior" was performed, during the shows in London and Birmingham.
